New FTDI EQDIR USB Adapter for Sky-Watcher EQ6 or NEQ6 Syntrek or PRO Mounts.

Also suitable for use with the Orion Atlas EQ-G mount. 

This convenient FTDI EQDIR adapter allows direct connection of Sky-watcher EQ6 or NEQ6 Syntrek/PRO mounts to your laptop.  It uses a 9 Pin type connection (NOT an RJ12/RJ45!)

The FTDI 232R chipset works reliably across all versions of Windows and, because each cable has a unique chipset ID, each time you unplug the adapter then plug it back into the same computer, even if on a different physical USB port, the COM port number remains the same.

We have also taken this opportunity to specify higher quality plugs. I.e. the DSUB plug has thumbscrews, so is easy to secure, and the point where the cable fits the plugs is nice and tight to prevent moisture entering the plug.

Windows users, the EQDIR adapter should install automatically but should you require drivers they can be downloaded here.

The EQMOD project consists of a suite of open source applications that bypasses the hand-controller and communicates directly with the mount’s stepper motor controller.

“I use a Sky-Watcher EQ6 mount and a windows 10 laptop. Downloaded ASCOM and EQMOD and then just connect scope using this cable to a USB port (or USB hub in my case). I then went into Windows management and noticed that the USB cable was using COM3 port, so you then just run the EQMOD ASCOM setup and select COM3 and bingo; everything connects and works perfectly. I also use PHD pulse guiding via EQMOD and it all works a treat with this cable.”  Keith

I plugged the lead in, it installed its own drivers and, well, nothing really. This was the first time I had tried to control the mount from my laptop and despite searching around it took me around a day to realise I also needed something like Stellarium Scope. I can’t say I found it easy to get everything working but thanks to this lead I can click on Stellarium and my scope goes there and then Astro Tortilla plate solves for me making the final adjustments.
